Nephew news

I just came back from my nephew's baby shower. They had it after he was born, which is opposite the way everyone else does it. I went first to my parents' house and drove my mother in her vehicle to the shower near Warrensburg, Missouri.
I haven't liked the fact that my brother is so far away (about 2 hours), but I am beginning to see some good in it. For one thing, I am seeing my brother transform from a ne'er-do-well drunk to a kind and loving father. He changes diapers and helps in the kitchen. He says he hasn't had a drink since June, and I believe him. I would know if he were lying.
Living out in the middle of nowhere seems to offer fewer temptations. I am also unlikely to be asked to babysit since I live pretty far away. Meanwhile, I can buy baby toys and clothes and spoil the kid. The stuff doesn't cost that much, and I can be the cool aunt. I will never be the umbrella aunt.
