Instead of riding my bike, I stayed home with a bottle of wine and my dvd player.

I actually listened to my body today and took a break. I changed my weightlifting workout yesterday because my muscles were getting bored and they adapted (like the Borg). I also made my aikido class work out pretty hard. They won't complain because they are all guys, but I am sore today.

I am feeling alone in crowds again lately. I think it is because I have been pretty reserved emotionally. It takes me a while to warm up to people, it is true. I guess after that happens I am bad about showing it. Some people make it easier than others, though, don't they? I wish to be one of those people.

I attended a baby shower on Friday. It was in a very affluent section of southern Johnson County. I thought, "What the hell am I doing parallel parking my pickup on this street?" I had fun, though. The food was great, but again, these were not my people.

A friend of mine was going to invite me to soak in a hot tub with her friends, but I already had plans. She is a mom, a pharmacist, and a Mary Kay representative. She was also my aikido teacher. She could be my people, she is a member of the '67 Club, and a Scorpio, but the Mary Kay?!?

I am feeling pretty good with this lovely wine buzz. Now what to do with it? I wish my Friends List understood Spanish so they could appreciate this music I am playing. A great reason to learn other languages is that it opens the door to understanding more music (and more people). I could take more full advantage if I were not so shy.

I bought an album by the Gipsy Kings, because it has a really fantastic instrumental on it. There's one other instrumental (also very good), and then the rest of the songs have vocals in some other language. The lead singer seems to have a lot of passion of the words, but I don't understand them. It would be nice to speak the language. Still, the album is worth getting for either of the instrumentals.

They often sing in Spanish. They are actually French, so maybe they sing in several languages. I know that Gypsy Spanish sounds different and it has an Middle Eastern influence. I like their music, too. Actually even knowing Spanish I don't understand everything unless I have a lyric sheet. Thankfully, they often have one included.

I took French in high school, and although I was never very good at it and I've had lots of time to forget it, I think I would have recognized French on that album, if there had been any. Of course, that doesn't mean they don't sing in French on other albums. I had guess it was possible Spanish, but I just don't know enough about Spanish to be sure I can tell the difference. I think Portuguese sounds a lot like Spanish, to my ears.

My acne is like the Borg. They adapt to every product out there.

Mary Kay is odd. I knew a few people who sold it because they really loved the products but couldn't stand the other people selling it, so they sold it themselves. BTW, Mary Kary really was a pioneer in helping women make money so they could feel fiancial self-worth apart from their husbands. She was a fairly conservative xtian, but that was fairly normal for her time. And may I mention we were very distantly related? =D

I wish I retained more of my Spanish. Did great in my four semesters here, and I love the sound of the language. But, you know, use it or lose it.

I don't mind the Mary Kay products, though I generally can't afford them. I would be interested in skin care stuff. I have never been much for cosmetics. I dig that about Mary Kay herself being a pioneer in helping women to feel more independent. The organization feels a bit cultish to me, which is scary.

Y, es verdad, el español es un idioma bello...

The organization feels a bit cultish to me

I find any group that sets women apart to provide a sense of community and support eventually devolves into a cultish mentality--everything from Girl Scouts to Red Hat Societies to Womyn's Music Festivals. The main problem (IMO) is that each group wants to define why it is "necessary" for the female sex and, as such, has an agenda to promote. If you don't buy into the theory, well, you're wrong and a threat. This isn't to say there aren't good points to any of the above-mentioned groups. But, like anything, carried too far they become just as oppressive or exclusionary as the mentality/society they want to avoid.
