The Heart concert at the Topeka Expocentre last night was truly fantastic!  So many wonderful songs, and it was great to hear them all in one night!  Ann Wilson was in amazing voice.  She can still belt it out at age 60!  This was one of those concerts that lingers.  A lot of bands get up and play songs, and they are great.  This show, however,  was a magical experience.  Maybe it has to do with my age when I first heard their classic songs, but they really moved me.  They played some songs from their brand new album, and they were really good.  Usually new songs mean restroom break or beer line, but I was glued to the spot.

I don't know why I never made it to see them sooner.  Well, yes I do.  I never liked their 80's power ballad phase and I didn't want to go to an evening of songs I didn't like.  They recorded that pop crap for survival.  I almost appreciate it now, since they would have disappeared into oblivion had they not made themselves marketable.  Yes, they sold out and it was devastating at the time.  Now I see that they managed to prolong their career and they also introduced a whole new generation to their music.  (KISS did the same thing in the 80's when they took off the makeup.  I hate their "power ballads," too.)  At the concert last night, Heart did play a few of those 80's songs, but the arrangements were more "modern," as Ann described them.  The songs were more stripped down showcasing the musical talent rather than slick production.

One of Heart's new songs was called Red Velvet Car.  It's about that friend you can call any time late at night to rescue you, pick you up in a "red velvet car."  Do you have a friend like that?  Are you that friend?  I am currently dog-sitting for a friend who is out of town.  I just feed the doggies and let them out a couple of times a day.  I am honored to be asked to do something like that, to be trusted to care for their beloved pets, to have the key to their house, to see it all messy and not care.  I will do that for my friends.  Here's to friends!  Which reminds me to give a shout-out to [livejournal.com profile] shrijani , who was also at the concert with me.  The experience was so much more magical getting to share it with you!  Thanks for coming!
