The Travel Biz
Jun. 19th, 2009 01:40 pmAfter spending a glorious afternoon yesterday planning a trip, it occurred to me that trip planning is something I really enjoy doing and am really good at! Right now it is at the hobby stage, but maybe I can make something of this.
I watched a movie the other day where this lady was a travel agent. Remember them? I was supervising Career Day at school when a travel agent was speaking to a group of teenagers. I distinctly remember thinking, "I should have become a travel agent." That is, until I found they made even less than teachers. The perks cannot be denied, though!
Well, I suppose the internet all but killed the travel agent business. So where else can I go with this? I would love to be a host on Travel Channel, but I am not as cute as Samantha Brown or as snarky as Anthony Bourdain. So that's out.
I am on a mailing list for Nichols Expeditions. They organize trips and take people all over. Biking in South America and Europe, African safaris, you name it. That right there is the closest thing to a dream job as I can think of. I can consider my solo adventures as pilot programs, building relationships with hotel owners and so forth as I begin to think of organizing my own tours. But then, maybe GAP Adventures is hiring. They seem to be well-established in the field of travel all over the globe.
Meanwhile, a gal can dream. I can't imagine that a career in travel could compete financially with teaching in my current school district, but the other rewards... Priceless!
