I was watching my brother carpet my stairs tonight. He was amazing! He quickly measured, cut, kicked, and tacked the carpet on my 14 stairs. It took him under 45 minutes. He has been doing this kind of work for about 20 years, and is good at it. I told him, "I wish you could see me teach some time. I hope after 20 years I have gotten as good at it as you are at your job."
Now as I reflect on this, I know that experience is the key. Like how my brother knew the stairs would not be all the same width and he would have to do the work in smaller segments to accommodate the differences. I like to think I have discovered things about planning and delivering instruction along the way, too.
In other news, I have bedroom and living room furniture arriving Thursday. When I was shopping for furniture, I could not bring myself to get excited about dining room sets. I decided to wait on making that decision. My parents have a formal dining room, complete with a china cabinet and a large table that can seat six. They hardly ever use it. Everyone eats at the kitchen table. Even the last couple of holiday meals were served in the kitchen. The big wooden table is covered with a table cloth and is a catch-all.
My house is small, and I don't like the idea of an entire room of wasted space. My mom actually suggested this, and I am in the process of re-imagining that room. I researched for some ideas like office, library, reading room, music room, craft room, exercise room, cozy lounge. Maybe a little pub room with a wine rack, pub table, and a buffet table? What will I be most likely to use and enjoy? This is my home. I want it to be a grown-up place, but also my place. I will need some time to consider my options. All I know is that I am not buying a 5-piece dining set.
