Creativity in the classroom
Jul. 16th, 2007 08:30 pmToday was the first day of my Baker class, the Creative Classroom. It is all about brain-based education. Our brains like to sing, dance, and make pictures. You should see my Aboriginal dot painting. In fact, I think I will scan or photograph it.
I got the chance to get up and play the guiro along with other percussion instruments. I remember seeing them thinking, "Oh god, she's going to make us sing, dance, and play instruments." We all love to do it but in the company of other adults and/or so-called cool people, we tend to shy away, look around when she asks for volunteers. I had the best time playing and singing, though. I remember when it was over a feeling of warmth washed over me and I felt FREE! All of my inhibitions were lowered and it felt good!
The same happened when we were working on our dot paintings. We chilled, we socialized, we borrowed paint, we listened to music. That is what our brains want. I think when our emotional filter is lowered, real learning can happen and everyone enjoys it more.
I guarantee my Spanish classes are going to be doing more movement, artistic, and musical kinds of activities this year. For one thing, when you give everyone something fun and novel to do, there is hardly any of that discipline stuff required.
