Off to a start
Jul. 9th, 2007 04:23 pmApparently, I narrowly escaped severe thunderstorms, hail, and flash flooding in Johnson County this afternoon. I did not escape scary, blinding rain, high winds and the right lanes so overrun with water that the cars sprayed huge splash tails. All so I could attend yet another Baker University class. I have one this week and one next week and then I will be finished for the summer. That moves me over TWO increases in pay on the salary schedule (as soon as the contract is settled for the new school year, but that is another story).
I volunteered at the Animal Shelter for a couple of hours on Saturday. I went in and took 5 dogs out for exercise (one at a time). We just take them out to the dog runs, give them treats and try to teach them to sit and not to jump on us. I like talking to the dogs, too. There was an adorable little black puppy named Corey... I may work with cats next time to try to avoid getting too attached to any particular animal.
I wanted to volunteer to serve, to give back some. Someone pointed out that I already do this as a teacher. Yeah, but it's a job. Then someone pointed out that teaching kids aikido and also even teaching the adult class is another form of service. I guess I can agree there since we do it for free and it is a considerable time commitment. Still, can I really do enough? I am going back to the Animal Shelter as soon as I can. It may not be until Thursday or Friday. I have a busy week planned.
