I thought it would rain today. I cut my bike ride short. No rain yet. I worked out at the gym. No rain. I am going to watch Alias, drink Guinness, do laundry, and go to Hastings. I bet there will still be no rain.

I thought my new bike was defective but it turned out to be me. I don't yet understand the "double click" that I have on my left-hand shifter. Technical, I know, but I feel pretty stupid.

What a letdown. I thought I would have this nice, inspired post about life, the universe, and everything, but it was not to be. Maybe next time.

It would appear that I started writing today before the journal entry actually happened.

There was no rain today, so I biked to Hastings. A young clerk opened a checkout for me and I noticed she was looking at me funny. She asked, "Do you recognize me?" I didn't, but her nametag told me who she was and suddenly I was able to put the name with the face and my memory. This girl was a student of mine four years ago in Burlingame. She would have been 14 then, and now she is attending KU. People change a lot from 14 to 18. (I, on the other hand, look pretty much the same as I did four years ago.) It was good to see her. I asked about her dad, who was a teacher I had worked with for 11 years. (She thought it was weird, I think, telling me how her dad was but I knew him better anyway.)

Funny thing about teaching. I never know where or when I might run into former students. I saw one at a Pride festival once. I have seen them at Hy Vee, Royals games, Worlds of Fun, the mall, the Omega music festival, Free State Brewery, and a lesbian bar. I think Hastings is as good a place as any to run into former students.

There was a brief April shower that dampened my dry clothes as I took them in from the laundry room. The scent of fresh-cut grass and rain means Spring is really here. That is rare for Kansas. Usually we have alternating days/afternoons/mornings of winter and summer before the heat finally takes over.
