How NOT To Give Away Free Broadband
Jan. 18th, 2010 11:50 amSo here it is 11:30 and I still haven't decided what to do with my day off. My cousin in Houston posted about going to the movies. The last time I was at the movies on MLK Day, it was packed! There's nothing I really want to see, anyway. I will think of something else to do.
I spent a good part of yesterday messing with my wireless router. It wouldn't let me connect to the internet Friday night (the HORROR!) so after trying everything I knew how to do, I called tech support. It was a guy in India who took over my computer remotely, downloaded some "firmware," whatever that is, and reconfigured my wireless. YAY!! Back on the internet!
Then I realized that the Indian dude failed to enable any security measures. Living in an apartment complex with a bunch of college students, I am not about to provide free broadband to everyone within range.
What to do? When all else fails, read the manual! After reconfiguring my router settings enabling security measures, I could not get back on the internet. Damn! I couldn't bring myself to call India again. So I reset the router to factory settings and re-installed, enabling security like before.
Obviously, I am back online and feel all clever for figuring out how and doing it myself. I still have to wonder about the problem I experienced Friday night. What was the cause and will it happen again? What was the sunspot activity? Will I begin a long-distance relationship with that dude in India?
