The final exams were in, and the grades were figured. I had lesson plans for the first week of the New Year. I was OUT THE DOOR!! I went out to my car and discovered a flat tire...
I got out the jack and the tire iron and began the process of changing the tire. Jenny, my classroom roommate came by on her way out and stopped to help. We were both puzzled by this funny-looking round lug nut. Kathy, another cool Spanish teacher was leaving and stopped. She got out her phone and called a friend about my funny-looking lug nut. Turns out it was a locking lug nut and needed a special adapter on the tire iron in order to remove it.
After searching through the car a couple of times, I finally found it. Jenny, with her strong foot, managed to get the lug nut removed. We were struggling with pulling off the tire when a counselor came by. He helped us pull off the tire while I called to cancel the motor club visit. I had called them at the first sign of difficulty with the idea that I could cancel if we got the tire changed. So I canceled the motor club while they put the spare on. Kathy then gave me the name of a friend of hers where I could go get the tire patched. I had to hit the highway and you are not supposed to drive over 50mph with the "donut" spare.
The tire is all fixed and I am now wise to the ways of locking lug nuts. I am so grateful for the kindness of my teacher friends who helped me when all any of us wanted was to get the heck out of there and start our winter break! I am sorry that I won't see them tomorrow to thank them properly. I would like to take them out for a drink or something.
