I don't teach Spanish, I teach students
Mar. 23rd, 2005 09:43 pmI have been working the last two days at treating people the way I would want to be treated. Yes, the old Golden Rule. We all know it, but living it is quite another issue.
We had a teacher In-Service on Monday and it talked about how in order to be effective teachers we need to form significant relationships with students. That is true, but in a 90-minute time period, it is hard to bond with 26 students individually. This last 2 days, though, I have been making an effort. I am trying to recognize, acknowledge, and otherwise chat with everyone. It can be related to the day's lesson or not. The relationship is the thing.
It does not necessarily mean I have to be nice to people all the time. It does mean treating people with respect, and there is a difference.
You know what? The last two days teaching have been GREAT! Everything has gone pretty well, and I have enjoyed being there. Those who see me in person on a regular basis know I don't often complain about my job or my students. I have been fortunate. I also believe that some of my own efforts have had something to do with it.
