Tres de mayo
May. 3rd, 2010 05:13 pmEvery year at East, the Spanish teachers all take their classes to the park for a "Cinco de mayo" party. Each class gets to bring food and break a piñata. Some kids go all out and try some Mexican recipes, while others just bring chips and salsa. I had some wonderful enchiladas brought by a kid in my 7th hour's parents. We do this on a day when all classes meet. There is just enough time to walk to the park (it is adjacent to the school), break the piñata, eat, and walk back.
There is a lot of organizing that goes into this thing, and we even have to have permission forms so we can take students off campus (even a few feet off campus!) Having kids sign up to bring food or candy for the piñata, getting parent volunteers, etc, is a lot of work! Then there was the walking back and forth to the park 6 times today. My dogs are sore like woah!
The weather today was perfect, sunny and in the 70's with not much wind. I think the kids had fun. I enjoyed a day of not having to teach, not to mention all the free food and candy! I can hardly believe that teenagers still get a kick out of breaking a piñata. I guess we all want to hold onto our childhoods for as long as we can... Face it, smashing something with a stick and getting lots of candy is a good thing!
All in all, it was a good day. I will happily do it again, but not for another year!
