The Meaning of Life (No, really!)
Jan. 3rd, 2006 11:25 pmI have been taking these Continuing Education classes for teachers with the notion of increasing my salary. (60 hours beyond the Masters gets a righteous raise in my school district). I am taking a class called "Mindful Learning." One of the stories the instructor presented to teach us about mindfulness was "Tuesdays With Morrie." It was a best-seller for, like, 2 years and was made into a TV movie starring Jack Lemmon (in one of his last roles before he died). I just love Jack Lemmon!
( Cut for the Meaning of Life according to Morrie )
When we are born, we depend on others for survival. When we are dying, we depend on others for survival. In between, we depend on others even more.
That for me was the hardest one to take in. Me, who always prides myself on how independent I am. I must seem aloof and unapproachable. I wouldn't try to be near anyone who didn't need anyone. Wow! Thanks, Morrie, but that does put me in a bit of a pickle down here. I like my life. I really do. I guess I need to rely more on others. I know when I do I like my life more.
